In Punjabi homes across the world, the names of Gama and Kikkar Singh are fondly recalled as the legends of a golden age of Punjabi wrestling. They emerged owing to a unique combination of circumstances—a culture that embraced wrestling, a pool of talented and dedicated athletes whose only purpose was to prepare themselves for titanic battles, and a group of wrestling-mad maharajas who financed the ancient sport of ‘Pahelwani’. This exciting new exhibition shines light on the art’s fascinating history, traditions and artistry, and explores the lives of Punjab’s famous ‘pahelwans’, or champion wrestlers, who strove to master its physical, moral and spiritual dimensions.
